Shared hosting is evil- it is very slow and the price of $2.95 a month will be just 1 year (max).
After promo period it will definitely increase and will be way higher (check all terms&conditions during checkout) comparing to VPS.
VPS is much faster and I would also suggest to go with VPS instead of cheapest shared hosting plan.
It is recommended to do a script on a VPS for sure. Much faster and better performance.
