I think you should use those however in past they were alot more helpful than they are now. The reason is this back then there were various keywords on which no video was made so using a keyword like that will bring organic audience to your channel but now there are fewer tags like that
All these things did used to matter alot in the past but nowadays if your content is good it can blowup in views without doing SEO, i have seen this happening

Yeah, the tag is not important for vlogs or for those who have got a big following...because their videos anyhow manage to get that initial push in order to make a video viral...
but the scenario changes completely with new creators we need to tell youtube that wat is our content is all about and where to push our video...
with the help of tag, youtube suggest our video to the new users that is what happened and this is what I observed...
for the new creator, it helps no doubt in it...

There's nothing wrong with tags usage but you will be wrong if after using about 10 awesome tags for your video and have a poor content because visitors aren't coming for the number of your tags but for a valuable contents. So your focus should be real value and not tags.
